What is Music Therapy?

The Canadian Association for Music Therapist defines music therapy as:

“ a discipline in which credentialed professionals use music purposefully within therapeutic relationships to support development, health, and well-being. Music therapists use music safely and ethically to address human needs within cognitive, communicative, emotional, musical, physical, social, and spiritual domains.”

Let’s break that down a little bit.

At Coastal Music Therapy, we use music within a therapeutic relationship (meaning a safe, supportive, and confidential space) to help others reach goals in various areas of health and wellness. This can look like working on speech and communication skills with a stroke survivor, working on developing social skills with a group of children on the autism spectrum, or perhaps using music as a medium for discussing mental-health. The possibilities are endless!
